How to build a storage bed
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the side storage units for the bed frame. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom and middle components.
Make sure the corners are right-angled and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.
The next step is to attach the top to the side units. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the top edge of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top component. Make sure the corners are square.
Attach the 3/4″ plywood back to the storage units. Align the component at both ends and secure it to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components. Work with attention and invest in high quality materials.
The next step of the storage bed project is to assemble the front storage unit. In order to get a professional result, you have to take accurate measurements and to cut the components at the right dimensions out of 3/4″ plywood.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom component and of the partition. Make sure the corners are square and insert 1 1/4′ screws to create a rigid structure. Add glue to the joints to add strength to the front unit.
Cut the top of the front storage unit out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the top edge of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top component. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints. The edges must be flush before inserting the screws.
Attach the 3/4″ plywood to the back of the storage unit and secure it into place by using finishing nails and waterproof glue. Make sure the edges are flush and the corners should be right-angled.
Next, build the middle frame that will hold the storage units together tightly. Cut the components out of 2×4 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components. Place the joists equally-spaced and insert 2 1/2′ screws into the rim joists.
Attach the 1×2 trims to the front face of the storage units, in the same manner described above. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the vertical components and secure them to the top and bottom trims using 1 1/4″ screws.
Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the trims. Add glue to the joints. Align all the edges with great attention and secure the trims to the components by using finishing nails.
Fit the trims to the side storage units, using the same instructions described in the diagram. Align everything with great care and secure the trims into place by using finishing nails.
Fit the frame between the storage units. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 2″ screws into the side storage units. Use a spirit level to make sure the frame is horizontal. In addition, lock the side units to the front storage unit by fitting several 1 1/4″ screws. Place the frame 3/4″ under the top surface.
Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood and attach it to the middle frame, as described in the diagram. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to check if the surface is perfectly horizontal and even.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to build the drawers for the storage bed. Therefore, build the components out of 3/4″ plywood using the information described in the diagram. As you can easily notice in the plans, you should drill pocket holes along the edges of the bottom and at both ends of the side components.
Afterwards, lock the components together by inserting 1 1/4″ screws and add glue to the joints. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components.
Fit the drawer inside the openings and secure them to the sides by using slides. Make sure the drawers open and close properly. Afterwards fit the faces to the drawers, making sure you leave 1/8″ along the edges.
It is essential to align everything with great care, otherwise the drawers won’t open properly. In addition, fit knobs to the drawers, in order to open and to close them easily. Align everything with attention and invest in high quality materials.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
