This step by step diy project is about spice rack plans. Any kitchen requires many storage space for dishes and for spices, so you have to consider building a really simple shelves unit. Remember that you need to plan everything from the very beginning and you have to make adjustments to the dimensions and to the design, in order to suit your needs. Attach a rod to the bottom of the rack, to hang towels and other items.
It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the spice rack. As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Make sure the components are in a good visual condition and choose professional tools when adjusting their size. Take accurate measurements and join the components with glue and screws. Building a Spice Rack
Building the sides of the rack
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides for the spice rack. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the 1×3 slats and to take accurate measurements.
Use a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the cut edges and remove the residues by using a damp cloth. Repeat the process for the opposite side.
Building the frame of the rack
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the bottom component to the sides of the spice rack. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to make sure the corners are right-angled, before inserting the screws into place.
Top Tip: Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom support and insert 1 1/4″ galvanized screws into the sides. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints.
Fitting the exterior components
Next, you have to fit the slats to the front and to the back faces of the spice rack. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×2 lumber (1/4″ thick). Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper to get a professional result.
Place the components with great care and secure them into place by using finishing nails and waterproof glue.
Fitting the middle partition
In order to add strength to the structure, we recommend you to fit a partition to between the sides of the spice rack. Drill pocket holes along the bottom edge and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the bottom components. In addition, secure the rails to the partition by using finishing nails.
Fitting the rod support
In order to add more storage space to your project, you could attach a 1/4″ thick rod to the bottom. You can hand towels or other kitchen items to the round support and therefore save space. Use a spirit level to make sure the rod is perfectly horizontal.
Spice rack plans
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Drill pilot holes through the rails and secure it to the wall by using appropriate screws.
