Building Bathroom Shelves

Building the frame of the bathroom shelves

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the bathroom shelves. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×8 lumber.

Mark the cut lines to the slats and get the job done with a circular saw. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess.

Fitting the shelves to the bathroom shelves

The next step of the woodworking project is to build the interior shelves, as described in the diagram. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the components.

Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints, after aligning everything with attention. Smooth the cut edges before locking the components together.

Fitting the back to the bathroom shelves

Continue the project by attaching the 3/4″ plywood back to the structure of the bathroom shelves. Mark the cut lines on the plywood and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: Make sure the corners are right-angled and secure the back to the structure by using 1 1/4′ finishing nails and waterproof glue. The edges need to be flush one with another in order to get a professional result.

Fitting the face trims

Fitting the 1×2 trims to the front of the bathroom towel shelves is a straight forward process, but you need to take into account several aspects to the get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and adjust the size of the trims before locking them to the wooden structure.

Leave no gaps between the trims. In addition, lock the trims together by using pocket holes and screws.

Fitting the middle trims

Get the job done by fitting the rest of the trims to the middle shelves. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the trims and secure them to the perimeter trims by using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square-angled and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the top trims

If you want to enhance the look of the bathroom shelves, we recommend you to fit 1×2 trims to the top of the bathroom shelves. Align everything with great care and secure them into place by using finishing nails.

How to build bathroom shelves

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden shelves in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
