This step by step diy woodworking project is about how to build a doll house. How to Build a Doll House
Building-the-sides-of-the-dollhouse
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the doll house. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and get the job done with a circular saw.
Drill starting holes and create the notches using a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues before assembling the doll house. Â
Fitting the window trims
In order to enhance the look of the doll house, we recommend you to fit 1×2 trims to the interior of the windows. Cut the components at the right size and secure them to the frame by using 1 1/4″ finishing nails. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
Ftting the floors
The next step of the project is to attach the 3/4″ plywood floors to the doll house. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the components before attaching them to the sides with 1 1/4″ screws.
Use a spirit level to make sure the sides are plumb and the floors perfectly horizontal. Check if the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.
Building-the-partitions
Building the partitions is a straight forward process, as you need to take accurate measurements and to use quality plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and get the job done with a jigsaw.
Fitting the partitions
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partitions and secure them to the structure using 1 1/4″ screws. Check if the corners are square and add glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure. Work with attention and align everything before inserting the screws.
Attaching the back of the dollhouse
Continue the project by attaching the 1/4″ plywood back to the doll house, as described in the image. Work with attention and leave no gaps between the components. Make sure the edges are flush before inserting the finishing nails.
Fitting the bottom trims
If you want to enhance the look of the doll house, we recommend you to attach the 1×2 trims to the bottom of the construction. Cut the trims at the right size and attach them to the structure using 1 1/4″ finishing nails. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Building the roof
The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the roofing slats to the doll house. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to cut the slats at the right size and to secure them to the structure using 1 1/4″ finishing nails. Leave no gaps between the slats and add glue to create a stronger bond.
As you can easily notice, you need to uncover several sections on the front face of the doll house, as to have a proper access to the attic. Leave no gaps between the components. Â
Building the front roof
If you really want to add character to the doll house, we recommend you to build windows for the front face of the roof. Build the windows out of 3/4″ plywood and fit 1×2 trims to the structure, in order to get a professional result. Secure the windows to the roof using hinges.
Buldling the front face
In addition, you could build the front wall for the doll house. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the wall out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill starting holes and build the windows using a jigsaw. Attach the 1×2 trims to the windows.
Fitting the front face
Align the front wall to the doll house and secure it into place using piano hinges. Make sure everything aligns properly and leave no gaps between the plans. Work with attention and secure the components into place tightly.
How to build a dollhouse
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project, we recommend you to cover the wooden components with carpet. Place the doll house in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
