Cucumber Trellis Plans
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the posts for the cucumber trellis. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you build the posts out of 4×4 lumber. Dig 24″ deep holes and set the posts into place. Make sure you plumb the posts with a spirit level and check if their tops are horizontal.
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the braces to the bottom of the posts, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the braces and through the posts and insert 5 1/2″ carriage bolts.
Make sure you level the braces with attention and you align the components at both ends. If you want to enhance the look of the trellis, we recommend you to mark the cut lines and to get the job done with a jigsaw.
The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the braces to the top of the posts. Mark the cut lines on the 1×6 slats and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues.
Attach a nice trim to the top braces, as describe din the diagram. Cut the trim at the right size and center it to the components, as described in the image. Drill pilot holes and secure it into place by inserting 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.
Continue the project by attaching the horizontal supports to the wooden posts. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the posts using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure you place the supports equally-spaced and check if the corners are right-angled.
Continue the project by attaching the vertical supports to the cucumber trellis. Place the 1×2 support equally-spaced and lock them to the horizontal supports using 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and enhance the bond with waterproof glue.
Last but not least, you have to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes and the cracks with wood filler and let it dry out for several hours, before sanding the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â Protect the wooden components from rot by applying several coats of paint. Choose colors that match the design of the rest of your property, as to enhance the look of the otrellis.
