Building an arbor
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the arbor. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the components out of 3×3 lumber and 2×2 lumber. Lay the components on a level surface, making sure you place them equally-spaced.
The next step of the project is to attach the 2×2 supports to the sides of the arbor, as described in the diagram. Place the supports equally-spaced and secure them to the components using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and pre-drill the components before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
Continue the woodworking project by building the support beams for the arbor. In order to get a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the beams out of 2×4 lumber, after taking accurate measurements.
If you want to enhance the look of the support beams we recommend you to make the decorative ends. Use a nice jigsaw to make the curved cuts and smooth the edges with sandpaper, before attaching the to the supports with 2 1/2″ screws.
Build the top wooden beams out of 2×6 lumber, making sure you pay attention to the pattern described in the diagram. Mark the cut lines on the beam and make the notches using a circular saw.
Top Tip: Make several parallel cuts inside the marked areas and remove the excess materials using a chisel. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and cut the ends in a decorative manner, as described in the image.
Fit the top beams to the sides of the arbor and drill pilot holes. Afterwards, secure the top beams to the support components by inserting 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Make sure the top beams are perfectly horizontal and the sides are plumb.
In order to get the job done, you need to attach the top slats to the arbor. Therefore, cut the 2×2 slats at the right size and secure them to the beams using 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the slats before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
One of the last steps of the project is to fit the braces to the arbor. Cut both ends of the braces at 45 degrees and attach them to the frame, as seen in the image. Drill pilot holes through the braces and secure them to the frame by using galvanized screws.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
