How to build a wood planter

Building-the-sides-of-the-planter

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the garden planter. Therefore, we recommend you to build the posts out of 4×4 lumber and the braces out of 1×4 lumber. Take accurate measurements and cut the components at the right size.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and attach them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add waterproof glue to the joints.

Building the frame of the planter

Continue the project by assembling the frame of the wood planter. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and the legs are perfectly plumb.

Fitting-the-side-slats

Attach the 1×6 slats to the frame of the planter, as described in the image. Drill pilot holes through the slats and secure them to the supports by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the slats.

Fitting the trims

If you want to enhance the appearance of the garden planter we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims to the planter, as described in the image. Secure the trims to the planter by using finishing nails. Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Fitting the cleats

Attach 1×4 cleats to the interior of the planter, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the cleats and secure them to the planter by using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the cleats are horizontal and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the floor slats

Attach the 1×6 slats to the cleats, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the slats and secure them to the cleats using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the slats.

How to build a wood planter

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the table in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
