Build a Train Table

Building the sides of the table

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the train table. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size, out of 2×2 lumber.

Top Tip: Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and lock them together with galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the 2 1/2″ galvanized screws.

Fitting the stretchers

After building the two sides of the train table, we recommend you to lock them together with galvanized screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretchers and make sure they are horizontal before inserting the 2 1/2″ screws.

Plumb the sides with a spirit level and make sure the joints are very tight. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid and durable structure.

Building the tabletop

Building the tabletop of the train table is the next step of the project. As you can notice in the diagram, we recommend you to attach the side trims to the 3/4″ plywood sheet. Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees before attaching them into place.

Drill pocket holes along the edges of the plywood sheet and clamp the components together. Insert 1 1/4″ screws and add glue to the joints. Leave about 3/4″ from the table surface to the top of the trims.

Building the frame of the tabletop

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the rest of the trims to the sides of the train tabletop. Secure them into place tightly and add glue, if necessary.

Train table plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the trims into the legs.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bar in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
