This step by step diy woodworking project is about porch bench plans. If you are looking for detailed plans for making a nice storage bench, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Work with attention and invest in high quality materials, such as pine, cedar or redwood, if you want to build a durable bench with a neat appearance.

There are so many designs and plans to choose from, that we really recommend you to take into account several alternatives before starting the actual construction of the bench. Gather all the materials and tools from the very beginning and ask a friend to give you hand, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. Use a pocket jig to drill several pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the porch bench, by using 1×12 lumber. Cut the slats at the right size by using a good circular saw and smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.

If you want to enhance the look of the legs, we recommend you to cut out a small V-shaped notch at the bottom of the legs. Use a nice circular saw to get the job done and smooth the surface with fine-grit sandpaper.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Continue the woodworking project by fitting the shelves between the legs of the porch bench, as shown in the image. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the legs and lock them into place by inserting several 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Place a spirit level on top of the shelves to check if they are perfectly horizontal. In addition, you should make sure the corners are right-angled and to plumb the legs with a level.

Fitting the partition

Fitting the partition

Fitting the small piece of lumber between the bottom and the top shelves is essential, as it will increase the rigidity of the bench frame. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partition and lock it between the shelves with galvanized screws.

Fitting the trims

Fitting the trims

Attaching the trims to the sides of the bench seat is not compulsory, but it will most certainly add value to the overall design. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut both ends of the trims in a decorative manner.

Align the trims at both ends, drill several pilot holes and lock them to the frame with finishing nails. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure.

Attaching the back of the bench

Attaching the back of the bench

Although this step is not compulsory, it will most certainly add value to the woodworking project. Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood and attach it to the back of the bench, if you want to store certain items on the shelves in a professional manner.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the porch bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
