This step by step diy project is about free playhouse with porch roof plans. This is PART 2 of the simple playhouse project, where I show you how to build the gable roof. The roof for this 6×6 playhouse has a 45 degree slope, for an elegant look and an amazing design. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a barn playhouse
The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the barn playhouse. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make 22.5 degree cuts to both ends of the 2×4 beams. Smooth the edges flush.
Build the gussets from 1/2″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and then get the job done with a saw. Lay the rafters on a level surface and align the edges flush. Lay the gussets over the joints and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock everything together tightly.
Fit the trusses to the top of the barn shed, every 16″ on center, as shown in the plans. Use a spirit level to plumb the trusses and lock them into place with rafter ties.
Fit 2×4 supports to the gambrel ends. Make the angle cuts to one end of the supports and then drill pocket holes at both ends. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the supports into place tightly.
Cut the panels for the gambrel ends using the information from the diagram. Mark the cut lines on the 3/4″ plywood panel and get the job done with a saw. Fit the panels into place, align the edges and insert 6-8d nails every 8″ along of the framing.
Fit 3/4″ plywood sheets to the roof of the barn playhouse. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the framing. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.
Use 4×4 lumber for the porch posts. Make a notch to the base of the posts, so you can fit them into place properly. Run several cuts with a circular saw set at 1 1/2″ and then remove the material with a chisel.
Fit the posts to the porch and plumb them with a spirit level. Drill pilot holes and insert lag screws to secure the posts into place tightly. Fit the 4×4 beam to the top of the posts for a professional result. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.
Build the porch rafters from 2×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the beams and get the job done with a saw.
Next, mark the location of the rafters to roof of the barn playhouse.
Fit the rafters to the top of the porch and then place them every 16″ on center. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock the rafter into place tightly.
Fit the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the top of the porch roof. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the framing. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.
This is a super nice playhouse that has a lot of character. Moreover, the little details and features helps you put a big smile on your kids faces.
This playhouse is easy to build, sturdy and it has a nice design. The barn style roof is rustic and has a super charming appeal. Check out PART 1 of the project to lean how to build the frame of the playhouse and PART 3 to learn how to build the railings and how to install the trims.
