This step by step diy project is about chalkboard coat rack plans. I have designed this rustic wall mounted coat rack so you can also write some notes on the chalkboard panels. You can easily adjust the size of the coat rack so it suits your needs. If you like the farmhouse style furniture, this coat rack would enhance the look of your home and add value. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a wall mounted coat rack
The first step of the project is to build the frame for the coat rack. Cut the components from 1×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components, as shown in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints for a professional result. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock everything together tightly.
Build the sides of the coat rack from 2×3 lumber. Align the edges flush and place 1×2 scrap pieces under the frame, so you can align it with the side supports. Insert 1 1/4″ pocket screws to lock everything together tightly.
Build the side supports from 2×8 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the pieces of lumber and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the surface thoroughly, so you it even out.
Center the supports to the sides of the coat rack and clamp them into place tightly. Drill pilot holes through the frame of the coat rack and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the supports. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.
Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood and cover one face with chalkboard paint. Center the panel to the back of the coat rack and secure it into place with 3/4″ brad nails. Insert nails every 4″, making sure you leave no gaps between the panel and the frame of the coat rack.
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the top to the coat rack. Cut a piece of 2×10 lumber and lay it on a level surface. Center the rack to the slat and them clamp them together tightly. Drill pilot holes through the top and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the side supports. Add glue to the joints for an even better bond.
Fit hook to the coat rack, as shown in the diagram. Make sure you align the hooks before securing them into place with screws.
Take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with filler and smooth the surface with 120-220 sandpaper. Seal the finish with a few coats of lacquer. Check out the rest of the my free woodworking plans HERE. If you build this, I would love to see your project.
