This step by step diy woodworking project is about 2×4 table plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a sturdy patio table. A table built entirely out of 2x4s will look rustic, but will still have an unique character. This is the ideal project for a beginner, as it requires common tools and basic carpentry skills. We have designed the plans to keep the expenditures under control and to involve the least amount of work possible. .
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 2×4 table
The first step of the project is to assemble the sides of the table. Cut the components out of 2×4 lumber at the right dimensions. Smooth the cut edges and drill pocket holes at both ends of the aprons. Align the edges with attention and check if the corners are square. Insert 2 1/2″ screws and add glue to the joints.
Continue the project by assembling the sides of the table together. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and along the top edges. Fit the supports to the sides and lock them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.
Build the tabletop out of 2×4 slats. Drill pocket holes through the slats, as shown in the diagram. Add glue to the joints and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly. Make sure the surface is smooth and even. Smooth the cut edges with 120-150 grit sandpaper.
Lay the tabletop on a level surface and center the frame of the table to it, as shown in the diagram. Insert 2 1/2″ screws through the aprons into the tabletop. Add glue to the joints and make sure there are no gaps between the components.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-150 grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain for exterior use.
