This step by step diy woodworking project is about ladder plant stand plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a sturdy plant stand, ideal for small a backyard. This is the ideal project for a beginner, as it requires common tools and basic carpentry skills. We have designed the plans to keep the expenditures under control and to involve the least amount of work possible. .

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build ladder shelves

Building the supports

Building the supports

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs for the ladder shelves. In order to get a professional result and to keep the costs under control, you need to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber. Make 20 degree cuts at one end of the legs. Smooth the cut edges with 120-150 grit sandpaper.

Cutting the top of the vertical supports

Cut the opposite end of the legs using the information from the diagram. Make sure you take accurate measurements, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

Continue the project by fitting the horizontal supports to the legs of the ladder. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports. Make sure the corners are right-angled and place the pocket holes downward oriented. Insert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws to lock the supports into place tightly. Add waterproof glue to the joints.

Assembling the ladder frame

Assembling the ladder frame

After assembling the two sides of the ladder, you need to lock them together, as shown in the diagram. Make sure the top of the posts are perfectly aligned before locking them together with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.

Attaching the shelves slats

Attaching the shelves slats

Build the shelves for the ladder out of 1×4 slats. Cut the slats at the right dimensions and center them to the supports, as shown in the diagram. Place the slats equally-spaced, if you want to get a professional result. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the horizontal supports.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-150 grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden ladder shelves from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain for exterior use.
