Wooden Crate Plans
Top Tip: You should adjust the size of the wooden crate to suit your needs. Therefore, make sure you pay attention to the instructions and adjust the size of the components to suit your project.
Building a wooden crate
The first step of the project is to build the faces of wooden crate. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to build the components using 1×2 and 1×3 lumber. Take accurate measurements before adjusting their size to the right dimension.
Check if the corners are right-angled before adding the glue and inserting the screws. Cut out a piece of wood in order to make the handle.
In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to fit several slats between the frames, as shown in the image. Make sure you place the slats equally-spaced. In addition, you could use a piece of plywood.
Attaching the sides slats to the frame of the crate is a straight-forward job, especially if you have expertise in the woodworking field. Place the slats equally-spaced, and lock them into place with galvanized screws.
Make sure corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square. Work with attention and drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the bottom to the wooden crate. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to cut a piece of 1/4″ or 1/2″ plywood to the frame.
Align the plywood piece at both ends and lock it into place with finishing nails. Make sure there are no gaps between the plywood sheet and the slats. Add waterproof glue in order to enhance the bond of the joints.
After assembling the storage crate we recommend you to check if the components are locked together properly. Insert the galvanized screws properly, making sure they are at the same level with the wooden surface.
Top Tip: Don’t forget to apply a few coats of paint or stain to the components if you want to protect them from bad weather. Smooth the edges with fine sandpaper.
