This step by step diy project is about DIY slatted garden bench plans. I have designed this simple slatted bench so you can build it for your garden as a DIY project. This bench seat is sturdy and it features a simple elegant design. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a simple garden bench
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the bench. As you can see in the diagram, you need to use 2×4 lumber for the components. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and then inert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular slats.
Use 2×4 lumber for the legs. Start attaching the horizontal supports from top to the bottom. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 9 1/2″ components and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.
The next step of the project is to assemble the bench by attaching the legs to the frame of the bench. Drill pilot holes through the legs and then insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame.
Attach 1×4 trims to the sides of the bench. Use 2″ nails and glue to secure the trims into place tightly.
Continue the project by attaching the 2×2 slats to the top of the bench. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.
One of the last step of the slatted bench project is to attach the 2×4 stretcher to the frame of the bench. Fit the slat into place, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock it into place tightly.
Last but not least, take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the bench.
You can easily make adjustments to my plans to suit your needs and tastes. See all my bench plans HERE. Moreover, you can adjust the height of the legs. See all my outdoor furniture projects HERE.
