How to build a storage bench
The first step of the project is to build the legs for the outdoor storage bench. Use 2×4 lumber for the legs. Use a saw to make the notches to the legs, as shown in the diagram. Make parallel cuts and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the recess with sandpaper.
Use 2×4 lumber for the side supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and then secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.
Continue the project by assembling the frame of the storage bench. Fit the 2×4 supports into place and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.
Fit the 1×4 slats to the exterior of the bench frame. Align the trims at both ends and place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats, to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the trims into place tightly.
Use 1×4 and one piece of 1×6 lumber (stripped to a width of 4 1/2″) and 1×3 lumber for the supports. Align the edges with attention and place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats, to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them to the slats.
Fit 1×1 trims to the lid. Use a miter saw to make 45 degree cuts to the trims and then lock them to the lid with 2″ nails and glue.
Fit the lid to the storage bench and then use hinges to secure it into place.
Make a few cutouts to the slats that go on the sides, around the legs.
Fit the slats into place and secure them into place with nails. Leave about 1/16″ between the slats to create even gaps.
This simple storage bench has a modern look and it will match the style of any furniture. Fill the holes and dents with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the bench and to protect the components from decay.
This is a simple woodworking project, so any person with basic diy skills can get the job done in a few hours. check out all my furniture plans HERE, for even more building inspiration.
