Kids Step Stool with Storage Plans

This step by step diy project is about kids step stool with storage plans. If you want to build a simple project for your kids, this step stool is a good option. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a step stool

Building-the-side-panels

The first step of the project is to build the sides for the step stool. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to use 1×12 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the slats and then use a circular saw to make the cuts. Use a jigsaw for the curved cuts. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Use 1×6 lumber for frame the storage box. Cut the slats at 12″ and then add glue to the joints. Drill pilot holes through the sides and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the 1×6 slats. Align the edges with attention and leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the front support

Use 1×2 lumber for the front supports. Drill pilot holes through the sides and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the front support. Add glue to the joints.

Fitting the bottom

Use 1×6 lumber for the bottom of the storage box. Use pocket holes and 1 1/4″ screws to lock them into place.

Next, use 1×8 lumber for the steps. Use 1 5/8″ screws to secure the lower step to the sides. Center the step into place and drill pilot holes, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Use hinges to secure the top step into place, so you can have an easy access to the interior of the storage box.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to protect the wood from decay and to enhance the look of the project.
