This step by step diy project is about farmhouse bench plans. If you want to build a wooden rustic bench, we recommend you to pay attention to the diagrams and to the detailed instructions. Don’t forget to take a look over the related furniture plans before starting the actual construction project, as there are many designs and styles that you could choose from.
If you are going to place the benches outside, we strongly recommend you to invest in quality and weather-resistant lumber. Therefore, choose cedar, pine or redwood that is in a great visual condition (perfectly straight, without cracks or chips). Use the pocket hole system to lock the components together, in order to create rigid joints and build a bench with a beautiful appearance. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a farmhouse bench
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the farmhouse benches. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to build the legs out of 4×4 lumber.
Nevertheless, you need to make 1 1/2″ notches in the legs, as to fit the braces. Make several parallel cuts with a circular saw and clean the recess with a chisel and medium-grit sandpaper, as much as possible.
The next step of the project is to build the frame of the bench seat, out of 1×3 or 1×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the slats and adjust their size to the right dimension by using a circular saw.
Top Tip: Assemble the seat frame on a level surface, making sure the corners are right angled. Drill pilot holes through the components before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
If you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure, you need to fit 2×4 braces between the legs, as well as a stretcher between the two sides of the bench.
Place a spirit level on top of the stretcher in order to check if it is perfectly horizontal. Lock the stretcher to the braces with pocket screws, in order to get a professional appearance.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the seat slats on top of the frame. Assemble the seat on a level surface. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the seat slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the end slats. Leave no gaps between the components from a professional result.
Drill pocket holes through the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the seat. Make sure you center the seat to the frame of the bench before inserting the screws.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden farmhouse bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
