This step by step diy project is about xxl dog house plans. This dog house is ideal for very large dogs, as it is sturdy and it has generous dimensions. If you like the simple design and you have a few basic tools, you can build this dog house in just one weekend. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a xxl dog house
The first step of the project is to build the floor frame for the dog house. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber and lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.
Fit 3/4″ plywood sheets over the joists. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the joists. Leave no gaps between the sheets.
Build the side wall frames for the dog house from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Align the edges with attention.
Continue the project by assembling the front wall of the dog house. Use 2×4 lumber for the components. Take accurate measurements before cutting the components. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are square. As you can easily see in the free dog house plans, you need to frame an opening so the pet can enter and exit the shelter. You can adjust the size of the opening to suit your needs.
Build the back wall for the dog house from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center, as described in the diagram.
Fit the wall frames to the floor of the dog house and align the edges with attention. Plumb the walls with a spirit level and then drill pilot holes through the bottom plates. Insert 3 1/2″ screws to secure the walls into place tightly. Lock the adjacent walls together tightly with 2 1/2″ screws, as well. Make sure the corners are square, as well.
Make sure you check out PART 2 of this project, so you learn how to build the lean to roof and how to attach the decorative trims.
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint over the components to protect them from decay.

If I go to get lumber is this exactly what I ask for to build this dog house? I’ve never build anything from scratch and picking up lumber myself.
14 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 6′
10 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 8′
1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 4’x6′
And then I cut these pieces to assemble?
Yes, but there is also PART 2 of the project. You need to buy those quantities, as well.
