8×8 Chicken Run Plans

This step by step diy project is about 8×8 chicken run plans. I have designed this square chicken run that is both roomy and easy to build, so you can add it to the 4×8 coop project. This is a simple one day project that will be sturdy and durable. This enclosure will help your chicken enjoy the fresh grass while being safe from the predators. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a 4×8 backyard chicken coop

Side-wall-frame-for-nesting-box

The first step of the project is to build the side frames for chicken run. Cut the components from 2×2 lumber and then lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the top and bottom components and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Assemble the front wall frame for the chicken run in the same manner described above.

Back wall frame for the chicken run

Repeat the process for the back wall frame.

Assembling the frame of the chicken run

The next step of the project is to assemble the chicken run. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the adjacent wall frames together tightly.

Fitting the supports to the top of the chicken run

The next step of the project is to attach the supports to the top of the run. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them to the frame of the run.

Fitting the chicken wire to the run

Next, you need to attach the chicken wire to the exterior of the chicken coop. Staple the wire to the frame of the run and make sure you stretch everything properly.

Trims to the front wall of the chicken run

Fit the 1×2 trims to the front of the chicken coop. Lay the trims over the frame of the run and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them into place.

Trims to the side walls of the chicken run

Fit the trims to the sides of the run, using the same techniques described above.

Fitting the top trims to the chicken run

Fit the 1×2 trims to the top of the chicken run.

Use 2×2 lumber for the door of the chicken run. Drill pilot holes through the top and bottom components and insert 3 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Fitting the braces to the chicken run door

Use braces to the corners to stiffen up the frame. Cut both ends of the braces at 45 degrees and then lock them to the frame of the door with 2 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.

Chicken run door trims

Fit chicken wire over the door frame and staple it into place. Attach the 1×2 trims over the frame of the door frame.

Fitting the door to the coop run

Fit the door to the front of the chicken run. Lock it to the frame of the run with hinges and install a latch so you can keep it locked.

Last but not least, take care of the fishing touches. Apply a few coats of paint over the wooden components to make the coop pop and to protect them from the elements.
