This step by step woodworking project is about fruit storage basket plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a beautiful veggie rack. We have designed the plans to keep the expenditures under control and to involve the least amount of work possible. The wooden rack is ideal for an outdoor kitchen or even for your home.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the storage basket won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

How to build a veggie rack
The first step of the project is to build the faces for the veggie and fruit baskets. As you can easily see in the diagram, you need to use 1×4 slats for the components. Use a saw to make the cuts following the instructions (30 degree cuts on both sides). Smooth the edges with 120 grit sandpaper.
Next, use 1×1 strips of wood to build the bottom of the baskets. Place a block of wood between the slats to create even gaps. Add glue to the joints and insert 1 1/4″ brad nails to get the job done.
Fit 1×1 strips of wood to the sides, as well. Use brad nails to lock the components to the faces. Alternatively, you could use 1/2″ thick and 1 1/2″ wide strips of lumber.
Build the side supports out of 1×3 lumber. Round the top of the supports with a jigsaw and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Use brad nails to lock the supports to the baskets, making sure you insert them from inside. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
Fit a 1/2″ dowel to the top of the supports using glue and brad nails. Make sure you leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden veggie rack with bench from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.
