6 Cord Firewood Shed Roof Plans

This step by step diy project is about 6 cord firewood shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the 12×12 firewood shed project, where I show you how to build lean to roof and how to attach the trims. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Materials

• F – 9 pieces of 2×8 lumber – 167 1/4″ long RAFTERS
• G – 18 pieces of 1×6 lumber – 12 ft, 8 pieces – 142 1/2″ long SLATS
• H – 24 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 84″ long PURLINS
• I – 4 pieces of 1×8 lumber – 84″ long TRIMS
• J – 10 pieces of metal sheet roofing – 3’x8′ ROOFING

• 9 pieces of 2×8 lumber – 14 ft
• 26 pieces of 1×6 lumber – 12 ft
• 24 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 8 ft
• 4 pieces of 1×8 lumber – 8 ft
• 10 pieces of metal sheet roofing – 3’x8′
• 500 pieces of 1 5/8″ screws
• 18 pieces of rafter ties
• 1 box of 1 1/2″ structural screw
• 3/4″ roof screws

How to build a 12×12 wood shed roof

Rafters-for-shed

Use 2×8 lumber for the rafters. Mark the cut lines on the beams and then get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges flush. You need the birdsmouth cuts to lock the rafters into place easily.

Fit the rafters to the support beams. Place the supports every 24″ on center. Use rafter ties and 1 1/2″ structural screws to secure the rafters into place tightly.

We need to fit the 1×6 boards to the sides of the wood shed. Therefore, fit the 12 ft boards to the sides and lock them to the corner posts with 1 5/8″ screws. Use at least 2 screws for each screw. Place a 2 1/4″ wood block between the boards to create even gaps.

Next, attach the 1×6 boards to the back of the wood storage shed. Use 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats to the posts.

Finishing touches

Attach the 1×4 purlins to the top of the lean to roof. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws, to lock them into place tightly. Place the purlins every 16″ on center. starting from the bottom to the top.

Fit the 1x8trims to the front and back of the wood shed. Use 1 5/8″ screws to secure the slats to the rafters, after drilling pilot holes.

Next, attach the metal roof sheets to the top of the firewood shed. Align the edges and secure the sheets to the purlins with 3/4″ roofing screws, or the size recommended for the roofing sheets you get. Install the drip edges, as well, on all 4 sides.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the shed and to protect the components from the elements. This large wood storage shed is easy to build and will help you keep the firewood organized and dry for the cold season.
