This step by step diy project is about how to build a deck around a tree. If you have several trees or large stones placed on the area you are going to build your deck, you should know that you have another option than removing them. Therefore, you can incorporate the obstacles into the design of your deck and add value to your woodworking project, without increasing the costs too much.

We strongly recommend you to study the local codes before starting the project, as the legal requirements differ extensively. For example, you need to know the depth of the frost line, so to know how deep to dig the holes. In addition, you have to comply with basic rules, such as the distance you should leave between the joists or how to connect the ledger to the house. This requirements are a great starting point for your deck project, so make sure you use them when planning the constructions.

If you want to frame a deck around a small tree, you can do that relatively easily. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to fit the blockings between the deck joists.

Top Tip: In order to secure them properly into place, you can either drill pilto holes and insert screws into the blockings or use metal fasteners. Work with attention and make sure the corners are square.

After framing the deck around the tree, we recommend you to attach the deck boards and to trim them properly around the hole. Take accurate measurements and smooth the cut edges before securing them to the joists.

On the other hand, if you want to frame a deck around a large tree or other kind of obstacle, you need to pay attention to the instructions described in the diagram. It is essential to take accurate measurements before locking everything together.

You need double joists and double headers to create a rigid structure for your deck. Lay the boards, mark the cut lines and get the job done with a saw, before nailing them into place.

As you have seen in this detailed tutorial, incorporating large trees and large stones into the design of the backyard deck is possible, but it requires several steps. All you need is to create an extra under-structure to frame an opening.

Top Tip: You can mark the cut lines with a compass and create curved cuts, in order to get a professional result with a neat design. Use a circular saw to create the curved cuts.

Trex deck was built around a sycamore 23 years ago. I’m happy with the deck and the builder but those pesky skunks still try to squeeze between deck and tree. Typical tree guards will make blowing or hosing a bummer because they’ll catch the debris. Want a solid and rigid material to handle blow/hose pressure. Tree is about 2 feet in diameter, started at about 18″. Those darn skunks.
