Building a bench

Building the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, you need to use four pieces of 16″ long 2×2 lumber. Use a good circular saw to make 10 degree cuts at both ends of the legs. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner.

Building the sides of the bench

Building the sides of the bench

After building the for legs, we recommend you to assemble the sides of the wooden bench. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the supports out of 1×4 lumber. Cut both sides at 80 degrees before attaching them to the legs.

Make sure you pre-drill the supports before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints.

Attaching the seat slats

Attaching the seat slats

The next step of the project is to attach the 1×6 slats to the bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to lay the slats on a level surface, leaving 1/2″ between them. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner.

Drill pocket holes through the 1×4 supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the seat slats. Add glue to the joints and align everything with attention.

Fitting the side supports

In order to add extra-support to the bench, we really recommend you to fit the 1×4 braces to the front and back faces of the bench. Therefore, we recommend you to align everything with attention and to and to leave no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the legs.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wood basic bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
