Building a Bench

This step by step diy woodworking project is about building a bench. If you want to build a beautiful bench but you don’t have many woodworking skills, you should pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Don’t forget to adjust the designs and the size of the bench to suit your needs. Building a Bench

Building the sides of the bench

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the sides of the garden bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, you need to take accurate measurements and to mark the cut lines on the 2×16 slats before getting the job done with a circular saw.

Smooth the edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner. Work with attention and invest in high quality materials, if you want to get a professional result.

Fitting the seat slats

The next step of the project is to attach the 2×6 slats to the sides of the bench. Cut the seat slats at the right size and drill pilot holes before securing them to the structure of the bench. Add glue to the joints and make sure they are rigid and durable.

Fitting the backrest

Attaching the slats to the back rest of the bench is a straight-forward process, but you need to make sure everything sis aligned with great attention. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and make sure you leave no gaps between the components.

Attaching the stretcher

In order to add strength and rigidity to the bench, we strongly recommend you to add a stretcher to the bottom of the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher and secure them to the sides using galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Building a bench

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wood kids bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
