Building a platform bed
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the bed. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to use 2×6 lumber for the bed frame components. Take accurate measurements and get the job done with a circular saw.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side components and secure them to the perpendicular slats. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to create rigid joints.
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 2×2 cleats to the inside of the bed frame, as described in the plans. Cut the cleats at the right size and drill pilot holes before attaching them to the frame with 2 1/2″ screws.
You can adjust the height at which you place the cleats, according to your needs. If you want to create a completely level surface, place the cleats 3/4″ below the top of the bed frame.
Place the 1×4 support slats to the cleats and make sure they are equally-spaced, before securing them into place by using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the slats are secured properly and check if the surface is perfectly horizontal.
Building the legs for the bed frame is a straight-forward process, but you need to take accurate measurements and to use professional tools, if yo want to get a nice appearance. Make 5 degree cuts to the legs and smooth the faces with fine-grit sandpaper.
Attach the legs to the bed frame and make sure the joints are rigid. Add glue to the structure in order to enhance the rigidity of the bed frame. Drill pilot holes through the legs before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
In order to enhance the look of the platform bed frame, we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims to the top of the bed frame. Mark the cut lines on the 1×2 trims and cut both ends at 45 degrees. Attach the trims to the bed frame, leave no gaps between them and secure them into place by using finishing nails and waterproof.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bed from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
