The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frames for the bunk bed. Therefore, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×6 lumber. Take accurate measurements and smooth the cut edges, by using sandpaper.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the long components and secure them to the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

The next step of the project is to attach the 2×4 cleats to the bed frame, as described in the plans. Align the components at both ends, make sure they are horizontal and lock them into place by using 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the support slats

Continue the project by attaching the 1×4 slats to the cleats. Make sure you place the slats equally-spaced and lock them to the cleats by using 1 1/4″ screws.

Building the frame of the bunk bed requires another skilled worker, as you need someone else to hold the components locked into place while you insert the galvanized screws.

Plumb the legs with a spirit level before attaching them to the bed frames. Drill pilot holes through the legs and secure them to the bed frames using 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are right -angled and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the steps

Fitting the steps

Attach the 2×2 steps to the ladder supports, as described in the plans. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the supports, by using 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Attaching the guard rails

Attaching the guard rails

Cut the guard rails slats out of 1×4 lumber, making sure you pay attention to the diagrams. Take accurate measurements and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the exposed edges or make them round using router.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the guard rails and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and make sure you place the wooden slats equally-spaced.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the table in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
