Building a wood chest

Building the frame of the chest

Building the frame of the chest

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the wooden chest. Therefore, we recommend you to cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood and to lock them together tightly.

Top Tip: Drill pocket holes along the both ends of the side components and secure them to the front and back faces of the wood chest. Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Attaching the bottom

Attaching the bottom

Cut the bottom of the chest out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the plywood component into place and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Work with attention and make sure the edges are flush before inserting the screws.

Building the lid

Building the lid

Building the lid for the chest is a straight-forward process, but you need to pay attention to several aspects, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, we recommend you to build the frame of the chest out of 1×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular parts.

Build the top out of 3/4″ plywood, drill pocket holes along the edges and secure it to the frame. Add glue to create a rigid bond.

Fitting the lid

Fitting the lid

Fit the kid to the wooden chest and lock it into place by using metal hinges. Check if the lid opens and closes properly before fitting the hinges into place. Attach the handle to the front of the chest.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the chest in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
