This step by step diy woodworking project is about storage bench plans. Building a storage bench

Building the side components

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the storage bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the two pieces of 3/4″ plywood and to make the cuts with a jigsaw.

Top Tip: Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues thoroughly. Make sure the corners are right-angled and the measurements are accurate.

Building the frames

The next step of the woodworking project is to build the frames of the woodworking bench. As you can see in the diagram, we recommend you to assemble the frame out of 1×3 and 1×2 lumber.

Cut the components at the right size and assemble them together with screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×2 supports and insert 1 1 /4″ screws into the rails. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the bottom

Attach a piece of 3/4″ plywood over the bottom frame, as shown in the diagram. Fit the plywood piece into place, making sure there are no gaps along the edges. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock it into place. Add glue to get the job done in a professional manner.

Fitting the supports

The next step of the project is to lock the bottom and the top frames together. Cut several pieces of 1×2 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Check if the corners are right-angled and secure them into place, as shown in the plans, by inserting 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

It is essential to create rigid and durable joints, otherwise the structure won’t be durable and won’t have a nice appearance.

Attaching the sides to the frame

Attach the side components to the frame of the storage bench, making sure you center the components in a professional manner. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to get a proper result. Make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the sides.

Fitting the splitting wall

Although this step is optional, it will most certainly add strength to the overall structure of the storage bench. Cut the piece of 3/4″ plywood at the right size and drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the splitting wall into place and secure it into place with galvanized screws.

Fitting the back panel

Attach the 1/2″ plywood piece to the back of the storage bench. Fit the plywood back into place and secure it thoroughly with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the tabletop

Center the frame of the storage bench to the plywood seat, as shown in the plans. If you want to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to drill pocket holes through the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws.

If you want to add character to the woodworking project, we recommend you to round the front corners of the seat. Smooth the exposed edges of the structure with sandpaper.

Storage bench plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
