Building a wooden chair

Building-the-front-face-of-the-chair

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the back face of the wooden chair. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the legs out of 1×4 slats and the horizontal component out of 1×8 lumber.

Cut the components at the right size, making sure the cuts are accurate and the edges are smooth. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert the 1 1/4″ galvanized screws into the legs.

Continue the backyard project in the same manner described above. Therefore, we recommend you to cut the front legs a little longer, as they also support the armrests. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×8 slat and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the legs.

Don’t forget to add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure. Work with attention and align everything with attention, before inserting the screws.

Fitting the side components

Adding the side components is a fairly easy job, if you ask a friend to give you a hand. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and insert the 1 1/4″ screws into the legs. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints.

Fitting the cleats

The next step is to check if the corners are perfectly right-angled. Attach 1×1 cleats to the interior sides of the wooden chair. Place a spirit level on top of the cleats, to check if they are horizontal. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the cleats into the side components. The cleats should be 3/4″ under the top edge of the side supports.

Attaching the seat slats

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 1×4 slats to the cleats. It is essential to leave 1/2″ between the slats, if you want to get a professional result. Drill pocket holes through the slats before locking them to the cleats with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

If the cleats are fitted properly, the seat should described a perfectly horizontal surface. Work with attention and smooth the edges before fitting them into place.

Buildig the backrest

Building the backrest of the wooden chair is a complex process, as it requires a proper planning and professional materials. Cut the components at the right size before assembling them together with screws and waterproof glue.

Place the horizontal slats equally spaced, in order to get a symmetrical appearance. In addition, we recommend you to cut one end of the vertical components at about 75 degrees (15 degree cut), by using a miter saw. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the supports.

Fitting the backrest

Attach the backrest to the frame of the wooden chair, making sure there are no gaps and the edges are flush. Drill pilot holes through the vertical components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame of the chair. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the frame.

Fitting the armrests

Cut one end of the armrests at 75 degrees (15 degree cut) and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the frame.

Wooden chair plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden chair in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
