Simple Garden Bench Plans

This step by step diy project is about simple garden bench plans. I have designed this simple bench for your garden using just 2x4s. This bench seat is sturdy and it has a beautiful design so you can make your backyard stand out. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a simple garden bench

Frame-of-the-seat

Frame-of-the-seat

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the bench. Start with the 2×4 components and make decorative cuts at both ends.

Assembling-the-seat-frame

Assembling-the-seat-frame

Attach 2×2 slats to assemble the frame together tightly. Align the edges with attention, make sure the corners are square and then drill pilot holes through the 2×2 slats. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything together tightly. You can rip the 2x2s from 2x4s.

Fitting the stretcher

Fitting the stretcher

Fit the 2×4 stretcher to the bottom of the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the beams and then lock it into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the slats

Fitting the slats

Attach 2×4 slats to the top of the bench frame. Place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats so you can make sure the water will drain properly. Center the slats and make sure they overhang 3″ on both sides. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.

Last but not least, take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the bench.

You can easily make adjustments to my plans to suit your needs and tastes. See all my bench plans HERE. Moreover, you can adjust the height of the legs. See all my outdoor furniture projects HERE.
