How to build a modern bench

Building-the-bench-legs

Building-the-bench-legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the modern outdoor bench. As you can see in the diagram you need 2×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the components and then get the job done with a circular saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the recess with sandpaper.

Assembling the sides of the bench

Assembling the sides of the bench

Use 2×4 lumber for the horizontal supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and then insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them to the legs. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

The next step of the project is to assemble the frame of the bench with backrest. As you can see in my free woodworking plans, you need to use 2×4 lumber for the stretchers. Fit the supports to the bench, after making sure the legs are plumb. Drill pilot holes through the stretchers and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Check if the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Side-bench-slats

Side-bench-slats

Attach the 1×4 slats to the sides of the bench. Use a saw to make the angle cuts. Place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats, so you create even gaps. Insert 2″ nails and glue to lock the slats into place tightly.

Front slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to the front of the bench, as well.

Fitting the back slats

Fitting the back slats

Continue the project by attaching the slats to the back of the bench. You can use 1 5/8″ screws instead of the 2″ nails. Drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fitting the slats to the seat and backrest

Fitting the slats to the seat and backrest

Fit the slats to the seat and to the backrest. Make sure you fit the slat to the top of the bench. Smooth the edges with sandpaper or you could round them over with a bit.

Last but not least, make sure you take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the project.
