If you want to get a professional result from the very beginning, we recommend you to plan every aspect of the project such as the materials and the design you want for this venture.

Make sure you take accurate measurements and align the components at both ends, if you want to prevent costly mistakes. Building a wooden umbrella stand

Making the faces

Making the faces

The first step of the project is to build the front and back faces of the umbrella stand. As you can notice in the image, we recommend you to cut the 1×3 slats at the right size and to lock them together with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Place a spacer (5/8″) between the slats for creating consistent gaps.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and of the vertical rails, in order to create a rigid structure while getting a nice appearance. Make sure the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square.

Building the sides

Building the sides

Continue the project by building the other two faces of the umbrella stand, in the same manner described above. Nevertheless, the difference between the side faces and the front and back faces is represented by the width of the legs.

In the case of the legs of the side faces, we recommend you to adjust the width of the legs to 1 3/4″. Place the components of the panels equally spaced (3/8″), especially if you want to get a symmetrical result.

Assembling the frame of the stand

Assembling the frame of the stand

Locking the four sides of the stand together is not difficult, but you need to pay attention to several things. Therefore, we recommend you to plumb the sides and to secure the adjacent component with 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue. Check if the corners are square and make sure the edges are flush.

Attaching the top

Attaching the top

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to build the top of the umbrella stand and to attach it to the structure. Lay the wooden components on a level surface and lock them tightly with 1 1/4″ screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 11″ long slats. Center the tabletop to the frame and insert 2″ finishing nails.

Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to enhance the bond of the joints. Cut out a small round hole in the top of the umbrella stand, as shown in the image. It is essential to check if the corners are square. Lock the top of the stand to the frame with screws.
