6x16 Lean to Shed Roof Plans

This step by step diy project is about 6×16 lean to shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the free 6×16 shed plans, where I show you how to build the lean to roof and the front double 8′ door. In addition, I show you how to add decorative trims to the shed. The pitch of the roof is 4/12. Make sure you check the local codes and make adjustments to the plans, if required. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a 6×16 lean to shed roof

Building-the-rafters

First of all, you need to build the rafters for the 6×12 lean to shed. Use 2×4 lumber and make the cuts, as shown in the diagram. Mark the cut lines on the boards and then get the job done with a circular saw.

Fit the rafters to the top of the shed. Place the rafters every 16″ on center and lock them to the plates with rafter ties.

Roof side supports

Use 2×4 lumber for the sides of the shed. Cut the supports, drill pocket holes at both ends and then lock them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Lean to side panels

Fit T1-11 siding panels to the sides of the shed. Cut the panels at the right dimensions and then lock them into place with 6d nails. Leave no gaps between the panels for a neat result

Fitting the roof sheets

Cut the sheets for the roof from 3/4″ plywood and then fit them to the top of the shed. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters.

Roof trims

Fit 2×6 trims to the front, back and to the sides of the shed. Align the edges with attention and then insert 2″ nails, every 8″ along the framing.

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof with tar paper and then install the asphalt shingles. Make sure you also install the appropriate drip edges, so you can seal the shed roof. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for a tight fit.

Door-for-shed

Build the door panel from T1-11 siding and the trims from 2×4 lumber. Use 2″ screws to lock the panels to the trims. Add glue to the joints and align the edges flush.

Jambs

Fit the 2×4 door jambs to the front of the 6×16 shed. Align the edges with attention and then insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the trims into place tightly.

Fitting the double doors

Fit the door to the opening and then lock it to the jambs with hinges. Install a latch so you can close the door safely.

Side wall trims

Cut the trims for the sides of the shed from 1×4 lumber. Align the edges with attention and insert 2″ nails, every 8″ along the framing.

6×16 Shed Back Wall Trims

Attach the trims to the back of the shed, as well. Align the edges with attention and insert the nails to lock the trims into place tightly.

Front wall trims

Fit the trims to the front of the shed, as well.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components, so you enhance the look of the project and you protect them from decay.
