8x12 Short Shed Roof Plans

This step by step diy project is about 8×12 short shed plans. This is PART 2 of the short shed project, where I show you how to build the gable roof and how to make the front door. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Remember that you need to select the site for the shed with attention and that you have to comply with a few legal regulations.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

Building a 8×12 shed roof

Building-the-rafters

Build the rafters for the short shed from 2×4 lumber. Make a 15 degree cut to one end of the rafter. In addition, make a birdsmouth cut to the rafters so you can fit them into place easily.

Attaching-the-rafters

Lock the trusses together with a couple of 3 1/2″ screws, after drilling the pilot holes. Leave no gaps between the components and then fit them to the top of the shed. Drill pilot holes and insert screws, so you can lock them together tightly. Place the trusses every 24″ on center.

Gable-end-supports

Attach the 2×4 supports to the gable ends of the shed. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly.

Front-siding-panels

Attach the siding sheets to the front and to the back of the short shed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make some cuts so you can make the door opening. Align the edges flush and then insert 4d nails to lock them into place tightly.

Roof-sheets

Attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the roof of the shed. Leave no gaps between the components and align the edges flush. Insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the rafters, so you secure the sheets into place tightly.

Roof-trims

Attach the 2×6 trims to the front and back of the shed. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the trims into place.

Side-roof-trims

Attach 1×6 trims to the sides of the roof. Insert 1 1/2″ brad nails to secure the trims into place tightly.

Fitting-the-roofing

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a large piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

Door-jambs

Attach 1×4 jambs around the door opening. Align the edges flush and then secure the jambs into place with 1 5/8″ screws.

Door-panel

Use T1-11 siding for the door panel. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a neat result.

Door-trims

Attach the 1×4 trims to the door panel.

Fitting-the-door

Fit the door to the opening and secure it into place with hinges and with a latch.

Take care of the finishing touches. Frill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the construction.
