This step by step diy woodworking project is about work table plans free. This article features detailed instructions for building a work table on caster wheels built entirely from 2x4s. However, you can adjust the size of the 48″ long bench to suit your needs. You can complete this project in just a few hours with basic tools. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a work table from 2x4s

Building the legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the work table. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber, You can adjust the size of the legs to suit your needs.

Building-the-sides

Next, attach the 2×4 supports to the side legs. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber and attach them to the sides. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints to enhance the bond of the components.

Assembling the workbench

Continue the project by assembling the workbench. Attach the 2×4 slats to the side supports. Use a spirit level to make sure the legs are plumb. In addition, use a speed square to make sure the corners are right-angled.

Building the braces

Build the braces from 2×4 lumber. Cut both ends of the braces at 45 degrees.

Fitting the braces

Fit the braces to the bottom of the work table and lock them into place with 2 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes. The braces will make the workbench really sturdy.

Fitting-the-top-supports

Attach 2×4 supports to the top of the legs, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.

Fitting-the-top-slats

Attach the 2×4 slats to the top of the work table. You can drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws from bellow into the slats, or you can just secure the slats from the top with 2 1/2″ screws. Leave no gaps between the slats. You can glue the slats together before locking them into place, if you want to create a perfectly level surface. In addition, you can also use 3/4″ plywood for the top.

Attaching the caster wheels

One of the last steps of the project is to build attach the caster wheels to the bottom of the legs. Use screws to lock the 3″ caster wheels into place.

This work table is both easy to build and extremely sturdy. You can also adjust the size of the table to suit your needs.

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Top Tip: Apply a few coats of paint or stain to the components, to enhance the look of the project.
