This step by step diy woodworking project is about lumber rack plans. The project features instructions for building an a-frame rack where you can store cutoffs, using common materials and tools. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Lumber Rack Plans
The first step of the project is to build the bottom frame for the lumber rack. As you can easily notice in the plans, you should cut the components from 2×4 lumber.
Cut pieces of 3 1/2″ long 2×4 lumber on diagonal, using a saw. Fit the braces to the corners of the bottom frame and secure them into place with screws.
Next, attach the caster wheels to the bottom of the frame, as shown in the plans. Use screws to secure the caster wheels into place.
Build the top tray from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the 12″ long components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and the edges perfectly aligned.
Next, you need to build the vertical supports for the lumber rack. Cut both ends of the components at 80 degrees (make 10 degree cuts to both ends). Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Attach the side supports to the bottom and top frames, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame. Leave about 2″ from the top of the supports to the tray.
Next, you have to attach the rest of the support to the sides of the lumber rack. Drill pilot holes through the vertical supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the horizontal components. Adjust the distance between the supports according to your needs.
Fill the holes and dents with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Use 120-200 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Remember that you can adjust the design of the lumber rack to suit your needs.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the components from decay, we recommend you to apply paint or stain.
