This step by step diy woodworking project is about how to build a smokehouse door. In this article I show you how to build this basic door for the 4×4 smokehouse using just 1×6 cedar boards. The door has a rustic design that makes a solid statement in any garden. Remember to check out PART 1 and PART 2 so that you can learn how to build the frame and the roof for the smokehouse. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a weekend. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a door for smokehouse
The first step of the project is to build the door frame for the smokehouse. Cut the components from 1×6 cedar boards. Attach the horizontal braces to the door slats and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.
Build the diagonal braces for the door using 1×6 boards. Cut both ends of the braces at 51 degrees using a miter saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.
Fit the diagonal braces to the door and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ screws.
Next, you need to attach 5 1/2″ long supports (cut them from 1×6 cedar boards) around the door opening. Use 1 1/4″ screws to secure the supports into place.
Fit the hinges to the door first and then fit it to the opening. Attach the hinges to the supports with screws. Make sure the door opens easily and closes it perfectly. Afterwards, fit a latch to the opposite side of the door.
The smokehouse seen from one side looks both rustic and neat. The simple design combined with the clean lines make it an ideal choice for any backyard, as it will blend with any style.
Seen from the back, the homemade smokehouse is equally beautiful and interesting. All you are left to do is build or buy a stove to make the needed smoke. Use stove pipe to conduct the smoke to the house.
Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth. Don’t forget to take a look over PART 2 and PART 3 of the project to see how to build the frame of the smokehouse, as well as the roof.
