This step by step woodworking project is about double shed door plans. Building large double doors for your shed is the right solution, if you want to have an easy access and to store large items, such as a lawn mower, outdoor furniture or even a small tractor. Moreover, a nice pair or double doors will also enhance the look of your backyard and add value to your wooden shed.

If you want to get the job done by yourself, you should choose the right materials and proper tools for the task. Therefore, you could use the siding cut out of the front face, when making the door opening. In addition, use a good carpentry square, after adding every component, to check if the corners are right angled. Fit the doors into the opening and secure them to the jams with screws and heavy-duty shed hinges. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building double doors for your shed will ease the access, so you could store large items, such as garden tractors or outdoor furniture. In addition, if you fit trims to the siding, you could enhance the look of the wooden shed.

Top Tip: Install metal hinges designed for outdoor use, otherwise they would rust on the long-run. In addition, align all the components at both ends, if you want to get a professional result.

The first step of the project is to install 1×4 trims around the door opening, as you can see in the image. As you can see in the image, the lintel trim should stick out several inches on both sides of the door opening. Secure the trims to the walls with 1 1/4” nails, every 6”.

Top Tip: You could install a 1×2 strip of wood to the bottom of the door header. The wooden strip will act as a door stop.

Building double door for your shed is a straight forward process, if you follow the right plans. As you can notice, the double doors should be about 1/2” narrower than the opening, otherwise they won’t be able to open properly.

Top Tip: Cut the panels from 5/8” siding and attach 1×4 trims, following the free plans. Drive in 1 1/4” nails trough the trims into the siding, making sure the corners are right-angled.

Installing the hinges

Installing the hinges

After building the double doors, you need to fit them inside the opening and secure them to the wooden jambs with a couple of hinges. Before driving in the nails, you need to align the doors and make sure they are plumb.

Top Tip: Ask a friend to hold the door into place, while you install the hinges to the wooden jambs. In addition, fit a door latch to lock the doors together properly.

Installing the shed window

On the other hand, you should also fit the window inside the opening. In order to get the job done properly, you need to choose a window that fits properly and it is made of quality lumber. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the window. Add a bead of silicone around the window to seal it properly.

Add 1×4 trims around the window to hide the edges. Drive in 1 1/4” nails to secure the trims to the wall.

Last but not least, take care of the final touches. Check if the double doors open properly and make sure they are locked properly to the jambs. Fill the holes with wood putty, using a palette knife and let the compound to dry out for several hours.

Top Tip: Sand the wooden surface with 120-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a dry cloth. Apply several coats of paint to protect the lumber against decay.
