This step by step woodworking project is about modern garden chair plans. This footrest is easy to build and it is the perfect addition to my garden chair project. You can build this footrest with basic tools and materials. This chair footrest can be built in one day, if you have basic woodworking tools and skills. See all my woodworking plans HERE.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the bench won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a modern garden chair
The first step of the project is to build the legs for the chair. Use a circular saw to make the cuts to both ends of the 2×3 slats.
Next, you need to build the frame for the chair footrest. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the end components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges with attention.
Attach the legs to the sides of the footrest frame. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Fit the 1×3 slats to the top of the frame. Place a 1/4″ spacer between the slats, so you create even gaps. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly.
This footrest is an ideal addition to my garden chair project, as it will make the experience a lot more pleasing. If you have a small workshop with basic tools, you can build this footrest in a few hours.
Last but not least, take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the projects. You should also take a look over the matching double chair bench with table, garden chair or outdoor side table.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden bench from decay, I recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. See my other bench designs HERE.
