How to Build a Carport Gable Roof

This step by step diy project is about how to build a carport gable roof plans. This is PART 2 of the 12′ wide carport project, where I show you how to build the gable roof overhangs and how to install the finishing details. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a gable roof for a single carport

Building the overhang rafters

Building the overhang rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the overhangs. Cut both ends of the 2×6 components at 55 degrees, by making 35 degree cuts. Smooth the cut edges with 120-220 sandpaper.

Building the overhangs

Building the overhangs

Continue the project by locking the components together with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the 2×6 blockings. Place the blockings equally spaced and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the overhangs

Fitting the overhangs

After assembling the overhangs, you need to lock them to the gable ends. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 3″ screws to secure them into place tightly. Repeat the process for the opposite end of the carport.

Continue the project by fitting the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the rafters. Leave no gaps between the components and start the installation of the sheets from the bottom. Drill pilot holes and secure the sheets to the rafters every 8″ using 1 5/8″ screws. Repeat the process for the opposite side of the large carport.

Build the trims for the gable ends from 1×8 lumber. Cut both ends of the trims at 55 degrees, by making 35 degree cuts. Smooth the edges with 120-220 grit sandpaper.

Fiting the trims

Fitting the trims

Attach the trims to the front and to the back of the one car carport. In addition, fit 1×8 trims to the sides of the carport, as shown in the diagram. Use 1 1/2″ brad nails to lock the trims to the end of the rafters.

Fitting the roofing

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the carport with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a large piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

After installing the roofing, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes with wood putty and let it dry out for a few days. Smooth the surface with 120-220 sandpaper and apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the project and to protect the components from decay.

This 12′ wide carport is ideal for a truck or for a larger than normal car. Alternatively, you can use it for your compact car and have plenty of room left on all sides for easy access. Make sure you check out PART 1 of the project to learn how to frame the carport and take a look over my other carport projects (double, triple and attached carports).
