6×8 Lean to Shed Plans – Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of our 6×8 lean-to shed build! In this section, we’re tackling two crucial elements: building the roof frame and installing the double doors. The roof is designed for durability and functionality, with a 2/12 pitch for added overhead space, while the double doors provide easy access and a clean, professional look. With clear steps and tips, you’ll see how to transform your shed from a simple frame to a weather-ready, secure structure. Let’s roll up our sleeves and dive in!

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

STEP 4: Overhangs

Overhangs

Overhangs

Grab your trusty 2×4 lumber and let’s get those shed overhangs built! Start by cutting all the components to the exact dimensions shown in the diagram—precision is key here. Lay everything out on a flat, level surface so everything lines up nicely during assembly.

Next, drill pilot holes through the beams and attach the blockings using 3 1/2″ screws. Pop in two screws per joint to ensure a rock-solid connection. This will give your overhangs the strength and stability they need while adding a polished, professional touch to your shed’s roofline.

It’s time to attach those side overhangs and take your shed to the next level! Line up the edges of the overhangs perfectly with the top of the roof structure to create a crisp, polished finish. Secure them into place using 3 1/2″ screws, spacing them about every 8″ along the roof frame for a solid hold.

Be sure to check that everything is straight and flush as you go—this step isn’t just about looking sharp, it also adds serious strength to your shed’s structure.

STEP 5: Roofing

Roof-sheets

Roof-sheets

Let’s get that roof decking in place! Grab your 3/4″ plywood sheets and fit them snugly onto the shed’s roof, aligning the edges so everything is flush and seamless. Take your time here—no gaps means a cleaner look and a sturdier result.

Drill pilot holes into the plywood, then secure the panels with 1 5/8″ screws, spacing them every 8 inches along the rafters. This step creates a solid, durable foundation for your roofing material, making sure your shed is built to handle whatever Mother Nature throws its way.

Side-roof-trims

Time to add the finishing touches! Attach the 1×6 trims to the sides of the roof for that clean, polished look that’ll make your shed stand out. Align the edges of the trims so they sit flush with the sides and top of the roof for a professional finish.

Secure the trims in place by driving 8d nails evenly along the framing. This step doesn’t just boost curb appeal, it also protects the roof edges, adding an extra layer of durability to keep your shed in great shape for years to come.

Let’s wrap up that roofline! Attach the trims to the front and back of the shed, aligning the edges flush with the ends of the rafters for a sharp, seamless appearance. Take a moment to double-check the alignment for that picture-perfect finish.

Secure the trims in place by driving 8d nails into the ends of the rafters, spacing them evenly for a solid hold. This step not only adds a polished, stylish touch to your shed but also shields the exposed roof edges, boosting both durability and charm.

Installing asphalt shingles on your 6×8 lean-to shed roof is a straightforward process that ensures durability and weather resistance. Start by laying down roofing felt or tar paper over the roof sheathing to create a protective barrier against moisture. Secure the tar paper with staples or roofing nails, overlapping each row by about 4 inches to prevent leaks. Next, install drip edges along the eaves and rakes to channel water away from the edges and protect the underlying wood.

Begin laying shingles at the bottom edge of the roof, working your way upward in rows, ensuring each course overlaps the previous one according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Secure each shingle with roofing nails, keeping the nails covered by the shingle above for a clean, watertight finish. Take your time aligning the shingles for a professional-looking result that will last for years.

STEP 6: Making the Shed Doors

Shed-door-frame

Let’s build those door frames like a pro! Start by cutting 2×4 lumber to size for a sturdy, dependable structure. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical and horizontal pieces to create strong, tight joints. Lay everything out on a flat surface, making sure the corners are perfectly square for a flawless fit.

Once everything is aligned, secure the pieces together by driving 2 1/2″ screws into the pocket holes. This technique ensures a rock-solid frame that’s built to last, ready to support your shed doors and handle the demands of everyday use.

Door-panel

Remember those panels you cut out for the front wall siding? It’s time to put them to work! Attach the panels to the door frames, making sure they’re aligned perfectly for a clean, professional look. Secure them in place by driving 8d nails evenly along the edges, locking everything together tightly.

This step not only gives your doors a polished finish but also adds strength and durability to handle whatever comes their way.

Let’s get those door jambs installed! Grab your 2x4s and attach them around the door opening, aligning the edges so they’re perfectly flush. Drill pilot holes to prevent splitting, then secure the jambs in place with 3 1/2″ screws. Space the screws every 8″ along the framing for a strong, tight fit.

This step not only ensures a secure door installation but also gives the opening a clean, finished appearance.

It’s time to hang those double doors and bring your shed to life! Fit the doors into the opening, making sure they align evenly with the jambs for a smooth, professional finish. Secure the doors to the jambs using heavy-duty hinges—spacing them evenly along the edges for maximum support.

Don’t forget to install a sturdy latch to keep your doors secure and your belongings safe. With this final touch, your shed is ready to handle whatever you need to store.

STEP 7: Finishing Touches]

Let’s get that window installed! Fit the 24″x36″ window into the opening, ensuring it’s level and properly aligned. Once the window is snugly in place, grab your 1×4 trims and attach them around the window frame as shown in the diagram.

Align the trims carefully for a clean, polished look, and secure them using nails or screws, depending on your preference. This step not only enhances the aesthetics but also seals the edges, giving your shed a finished and professional appearance.
