When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

How to build a 5×12 wood shed
Framing-the-floor-frame
First, make the floor frame. Drill pilot holes through the 10 ft joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Align the edges flush and check if the corners are square. Place the joists every 16″ on center. Measure the diagonals and make adjustments until they are perfectly equal.
Placing the joists every 16″ on center will really help with supporting the weight of the firewood.
Fitting-the-skids
Use 4×4 lumber for the skids. It would be a great idea to use pressure treated lumber. Fit the skids under the floor frame, and use rafter ties and 1 1/2″ structural screws to lock them together tightly. Use 2 rafters for each skid.
Laying-the-floor-slats
Fit the 2×4 boards to the floor frame. Set 7/8″ spacers between the boards to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes through the boards and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.
Assembling-the-posts
Use 2×6 lumber for the posts. Cut the posts at the right dimensions and attach them together with 2 1/2″ screws, every 8″. Add glue to the joints and align the corner posts flush.
Fitting-the-posts—wood-shed
Fit the corner posts to the floor frame of the shed. Plumb the posts with a spirit level, drill pilot holes and insert 3″ lag screws to lock them to the floor frame. Also notice the extra middle posts to the front and back. These posts will add more rigidity and hold the supports beams.
Building the roof
Setting-the-support-beams
Use 2×6 lumber for the support beams. Fit the beams to the front and to the back of the shed. Drill pilot holes through the side posts and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the beams. Use a spirit level to make sure the beams are perfectly horizontal.
Also, reinforce the structure by fitting the L ties to the front and back of the shed. Insert 1 1/2″ structural screws to lock the straps into place. Add T straps to lock the middle posts to the support beams.

This large wood storage shed would fit perfectly into a narrow space or next to a fence. It is a beautiful construction and if built properly, it will definitely last for many decades. If you want to go the extra mile, you should use pressure treated lumber for the skids and floor frame.
