This step by step diy project is about 12×12 shed with a hip roof plans. I have designed this 12×12 shed with a hip roof, so you can store lots of items with style. This shed features a shed with a front door and with two windows. Make sure you read the local codes so you can comply with the legal requirements. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. 12×12 Garden Shed with Hip Roof Plans

Building-a-floor-frame—12×12-shed

The first step of the project is to build the floor frame from 2x6s lumber. Cut all the components at the dimensions shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″screws into the perpendicular joists. Place the joists every 16″ on center and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the skids – 12×12 heavy duty shed

Fit the 6×6 skids under the floor frame. Align the edges flush and secure them to the joists with rafter ties.

Use 3/4″ plywood sheets and lay them to the floor frame. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between the sheets. Insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the sheets, every 8″ along the framing.

Building the shed wall frames

Front-wall-frame—12×12-hip-roof-shed

Use 2×6 lumber for the wall studs and plates. As you can see in the diagram, I have added a door and a window to the front wall. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center and make sure the corners are square. Use 1/2″ plywood blockings between the triple studs. Use 2×6 lumber and 1/2″ plywood for the triple headers.

Plain-side-wall-frame—12×12-shed

Use 2×6 lumber for the plain side wall. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center.

Side-wall-with-window-frame

Next, frame the opposite side wall with a window. You can adjust the size of the window to suit your needs.

Back-wall-frame—12×12-shed

Frame the back wall for the 12×12 hip roof shed, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the plates. Place the studs every 16″ on center.

Assembling the shed frame – heavy duty 12×12 storage shed

Fit the wall frames to the floor of the shed. Align the edges flush and plumb them vertically. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor frame. In addition, lock the adjacent wall together tightly with 3 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges.

Top rails – 12×12 shed with hip roof

Use 6×6 lumber for the top plates. Make notches to the plates , as shown in the diagram. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and remove the excess material with a chisel. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Fitting the top rails – 12×12 shed framing

Fit the plates to the top of the shed and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the wall frame and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the plates. Make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the siding sheets

Back wall siding sheets – 12×12 shed

Fit the T1-11 siding sheets to the back wall of the shed. The plain side wall is identical to this one. Use 6d nails every 8″ along the framing, to secure the sheets into place.

Front wall siding sheets – 12×12 shed

Attach the siding sheets to the front of the hip roof shed. Make the cuts around the openings and then align the edges flush. Insert the 6d nails to secure the panels into place.

Side wall siding sheets – 12×12 shed with hip roof

Attach the sheets to the other side of the shed. Make the cuts around the window opening.
