This step by step diy woodworking project is about two person picnic table plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a picnic table for two persons. This is an unique project, so if you are into one of a king pieces of furniture, this is the project for you. Make sure you adjust the size of the bench to suit your needs. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Build a wood picnic table
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the table. Cut the components from 2×6 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal support and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.
Alternatively, you can drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the stretcher.
Next, you need to attach the 2×4 rails to the table supports. Cut both ends of the rails in a decorative manner. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the rails.
Add glue to the joints and smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Attach 1×6 slats to the top of table. Leave no gaps between the slats, drill pilot holes at both ends and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the supports.
Next, you need to build the frame of the benches. Cut the components from 2×6 lumber. You can drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the supports, or you can drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretchers and insert 2 1/2″ screws in the legs. Make sure the corners are right-angled.
Build the side rails for the two person picnic table from 2×4 lumber. Fit the rails to the benches and to the table, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the rails. Add glue to the joints to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Attach the 1×6 slats to the seat frames. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the slats and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ screws.
The two person picnic table once built, it will serve you for many years in a row. It is a simple design, but also very sturdy and durable.
The two person picnic table seen from above has an unique appeal. Adjust the size to suit your needs. This makes for a great weekend project, especially if you are a beginner to woodworking.
Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
Top Tip:Â Apply a few coats of paint or stain to the components, to enhance the look of the project.
