How to build a modern chair
The first step of the project is to build the legs for the modern outdoor chair. As you can see in the diagram you need 2×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the components and then get the job done with a circular saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the recess with sandpaper.
The next step of the project is to build the front and back frames for the chair. As you can see in the diagram, you need to attach the 2×4 supports to the front and back legs. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.
Continue the project by attaching the cross supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 2×4 components and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything tightly. Make sure the corners are square.
Fit the 1×4 slats to the sides of the outdoor chair. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts and then smooth the edges with sandpaper. Place a piece if 1/4″ between the slats so you create even and consistent gaps. Use glue and 2″ nails to secure the slats into place tightly.
Fit the slats to the back of the chair, using the same techniques described above. Align the edges with attention before inserting the nails.
Last but not least, attach the slats to the seat and to the backrest of the chair.
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes and the dents with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of stain or paint to enhance the look of the chair and to protect them from the elements.
This is a simple woodworking project, so any person with basic diy skills can get the job done in a few hours. If you like my project, I recommend you to take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans HERE.
