Building an indoor bench

Building the wooden frames

Building the wooden frames

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the four frames for the indoor bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together tightly.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and secure them to the perpendicular components using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush.

Assembling the bench is a straight-forward project, but you need to plan everything with attention and to take accurate measurements. Build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and attach them to the frame by using 2″ screws.

Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert the screws into the frames, to create rigid joints. Place the frames equally-spaced, in order to get a professional result.

Fitting the seat supports

Fitting the seat supports

In order to provide extra-support to the frame of the bench, we recommend you to attach the 1×3 supports to the woodworking bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the front and to the back face of the bench by using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.

Attaching the seat

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the 3/4″ plywood seat to the frame of the bench. You could drill pilot holes through the seat and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame of the bench.

Alternatively, you could drill pocket holes through the supports and through the top components. Attach the seat with attention and insert the 1 1/4″ screws through the supports into the seat.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wood kids bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
