Hey there, builders! I’ve got new plans for you: a matching 2×6 modern chair, complete with a backrest and armrests. This chair is the perfect companion to our bench, giving you that extra seating with a dash of style for your garden or porch. It’s a simple yet rewarding project that’ll complement your bench perfectly. So, let’s dive in, grab those 2x6s and 2x4s, and create a cozy spot where you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor! Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Premium Plans for this project available in the Shop.
Let’s break down the cost for building this modern chair! You’ll need about $20 worth of boards, which you can easily find at your local hardware store. Add in $10 for screws and fasteners, plus another $10 for a nice wood finish to keep it looking great outdoors. So, for around $40 total, you can create a beautiful, sturdy chair that complements your bench perfectly and adds a cozy touch to your outdoor space.
For this project, I recommend using cedar or hardwood for their durability and natural resistance to the elements. Cedar is a fantastic option because it’s lightweight, rot-resistant, and has a beautiful, rustic look. Hardwood, on the other hand, provides superior strength and longevity, making your mailbox stand a sturdy and stylish addition to your home.

Outdoor Chair from Standard 2×6 Lumber
First, let’s begin by cutting the legs for our chair using 2×6 lumber. Carefully mark your cut lines, ensuring accuracy, and then use your circular saw or miter saw to make the precise cuts.
Once you have your pieces, take a sander and smooth the edges to achieve a clean, polished finish. With these steps, we’re laying a strong foundation for a chair that will serve us well.
Next, we need to assemble the sides for our outdoor chair. Lay the legs on a level surface, and use a straight edge to ensure the bottoms are perfectly aligned. Refer to the diagram to properly join the legs together. Drill pilot holes and secure them firmly with three screws each. By taking these careful steps, we’re ensuring the stability and durability of our chair.
Â
Next, it’s time to start attaching the 2×6 seat slats to our chair. Center the boards on the frame, ensuring an even layout, and use a 1/4″ spacer between each board for consistent spacing.
Drill pilot holes to prepare for the screws, then secure the seat boards with 2 1/2″ screws. Place two screws at each end of every board to ensure everything is firmly and securely fastened. With this meticulous approach, we’re building a chair that’s both sturdy and comfortable.
Â
Now, we need to attach an extra piece of 2×6 lumber to the front legs of our chair. Carefully make the angle cuts on the boards, ensuring precision. Once your cuts are made, align the edges flush and secure them in place with 2 1/2″ screws.
For added strength, apply glue to the joints before fastening. This careful attention to detail will provide extra stability and durability to our chair.
Using 2×4 lumber, we will now add the stretcher for our chair. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher to prepare it for assembly. Secure the stretcher to the sides with 2 1/2″ screws, ensuring that it is properly aligned.
Refer to the diagrams to confirm that the stretcher is centered on the side frames. This will enhance the structural integrity and balance of our chair.

DIY Backrest and Armrests for Outdoor Chair
Now, let’s attach the 2×6 boards to the back of our chair. Begin by drilling pocket holes at both ends of each board. Then, use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the boards to the side legs. Ensure that the boards are aligned flush with the back legs, providing a clean, sturdy finish.
Â
Now, let’s add the final touches to our modern wooden chair. Using 2×4 lumber, we’ll create the supports. Carefully make the angle cuts on the supports and drill pocket holes on the lower side, which will attach to the frame. Align the supports in place and secure them with 2 1/2″ screws. These final adjustments will provide the necessary strength and elegance to complete our chair, ensuring it is both functional and stylish.
Using 2×4 lumber, we’ll now create the armrests for our chair. Take your jigsaw and carefully round off the exterior edges of each board for a smooth look. Following the diagram, cut out the notch in each board to ensure a proper fit. Finally, smooth all the edges with sandpaper to achieve a clean, polished finish. These armrests will add both comfort and a touch of elegance to our chair.
Next, we’re going to attach the armrests using 2 1/2″ screws. Carefully drive the screws through the armrests into the supports and back legs. Be sure to drill pilot holes first to prevent the wood from splitting. This step ensures that our chair is both sturdy and well-crafted, providing long-lasting comfort and durability.
