Outdoor Chair – DIY Project

From Aimee Wright,

I built this chair out of cedar for around $50 in materials. I made it out of cedar 2×4’s and cedar fence pickets. I kept my costs down by using 2×4’s for the legs only, then ripping them to 2×2’s which I used for the frame and backrest supports. I purchased just two cedar 2×4’s, one at 8′ and one at 12′ for around $35, and five 1x6x6 fence pickets for about $15.

You could do it for around $35 if you used PT pine or SPF and followed his shopping list, or even less if you ripped the 2×4’s as I did. I also used Titebond III waterproof glue and brad nails for all the slats and screws for the 2″ joints only. I angled the back to 22.5 degrees instead of 15 and extended it up to 26″, then rounded the sharp corners due to personal preference.

Finally, I applied Thompson’s WaterSeal in the transparent cedar color. I just worked on it in the evenings for a few days and didn’t keep track of my time, but one day seems about right. It was a fun build! Thanks so much for making these plans available to all of us budding woodworkers!
