There are several aspects that any person should take into account before starting the woodworking project. First of all, you need to use weather-resistant lumber, such as cedar, pine or redwood. Building a garden chair

Building the legs

First, build the back legs for the garden chair. We recommend you to mark the cut lines on the wooden slat and to get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues.

It is essential to take accurate measurements and to make sure the blade of the circular saw goes exactly over the lines. Sand the components thoroughly, before continuing the project.

Building the back frame of the chair

Continue the garden project by attaching the 2×2 supports to the back legs of the structure, as described in the project. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and to insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.

Leave no gaps between the components, make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Building the front of the chair frame

Next,  assemble the front frame for the garden chair. We recommend you to use 2×2 lumber for the legs and 1×3 lumber for the seat frame. Take accurate measurements and smooth the curt edges with sandpaper.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the front and back components. In addition, drill pocket holes at one end of the side components. Insert 1 1/4″ screws, after making sure the corners are square.

Assembling the frame of the chair

In order to complete the woodworking project, we recommend you to assemble the front frame of the chair with the back legs. Therefore, drill pilot hols through the seat frame and insert 1 1 /4″ screws into the back legs. Add glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure. 

Place a spirit level on the chair aprons to make sure they are perfectly horizontal. In addition, plumb the front legs and make sure the corners are perfectly right-angled. 

Installing the seat slats

Lay the 1×4 slats to the seat frame, making sure the edges are flush and there are no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame of the seat. Add glue to the joints and between the slats, in order to enhance the bond of the structure.

Fitting the backrest slats

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 1×4 slats to the backrest. As you can notice in the image, you need to adjust the length of the slats at 16″. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Align the bottom edges of the slats to the lower support, drill pilot holes and secure them into place by using 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the slats and add glue to enhance the bond of the structure.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you need to fill the cracks with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Afterwards, sand the wooden surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues thoroughly.

Top Tip: Protect the wooden components from wood decay by applying several coats of stain or paint.
